The surf season is considered to be June - September, but the shoulder seasons provide great waves as well, which is why the Krui Surf Hotel is open from mid-Feb to mid-Nov. The weather doesn't change much during that time, and is usually 25-30C/ 75-83F.
The hotel is a 6 hour drive from the nearest airport which keeps the crowds down. What makes this place unique is the massive garden. No other place in the area has as much free, open space with limited guests, to make you feel like you're in your own secluded paradise.
We provide laundry service and wifi, free of charge. The laundry service is good, the wifi is not the fastest, but you can check your emails and social media.
The dining and bar area comes fully stocked with books, cards, board games, and a croquet set to help you make the most of the garden. Breakfast and lunch are served from 7am-2pm where you order from a menu at any time, as much as you like, so you'll never go hungry and don't have to schedule your surf around your meal times. Dinner is served family style around 6:30pm so you can always surf till dark.
Your average day might be an early surf, with breakfast before or after, then some time spent relaxing in a hammock or getting a massage while you listen to the waves, or maybe sitting by the pool until you have lunch, then head back out for an afternoon surf, coming back to watch the sunset and enjoy a cold beer before a dinner of locally caught fish and coconut rice. The food is top notch and always fresh, healthy, and varied. The atmosphere is very relaxed and laid back.
This area provides all types of surf for all types of surfers, however a little experience goes a long way. There are waves for beginners, but it's not advised for learning. The surf season runs from March into November, with peak season (biggest swells) being June-Sept. Trade winds usually start in May and finish in October. Most of the waves (except the beach breaks) benefit from the trade winds. The average wave height is 3-4 feet, with the biggest swells reaching reaching 10-12 feet. There are several waves that won't be mentioned here, as they're not common knowledge yet. Our surf guide has years of local experience will always make the right call for you. Below you'll find all the usual suspects in the area.
Leftovers (reef, 700m down the beach) a fast, fun, barreling left, that likes a SW swell, and higher tides. Intermediate to advanced surfers
The Peak (reef, 1.5km) a barreling right and more forgiving left, that works best on SSW & SW swells and mid-high tides. Intermediate to advanced.
Krui Bowls (reef) a barreling left that likes SW swells and higher tides. Intermediate and advanced.
Krui Left (forgiving reef) a consistent, fun, mechanical wave suited for all ability levels. Works best on mid-higher tides, but will work on all tides depending on the swell. This wave rarely gets bigger than 4-6 feet.
Krui Right (reef) not as consistent as Krui Left, but just as fun. Higher tides, all levels.
Mandiri and La'ai (sand, beach break). All tides, all swell directions, all ability levels, and work best in early mornings or late afternoons.
Ujung Bocor (reef) 25 min away, and the longest wave in the area sometimes providing waves up to 250m long. This wave has different personalities depending on the swell and tide, but does work on all tides and is suited for all abilities. Higher tides and smaller swells being more forgiving, with lower tides providing barrels and long, workable walls.
Way Jambu (sometimes called Sumatran Pipe, reef) 10 min past Ujung Bocor. This lefthander is a barreling freight train. Advanced to hellmen/hellwomen.
Pugung area (1-1.5 hours)
Jenny's Right (reef) low to mid tides and offseason winds. From a technical stand point, you don't really want to score this wave since that means the winds were bad, but the great news is there's always an option for surf even when the wind is bad. Suitable for all levels, but wouldn't advise it for learning.
Honeysmacks (reef) heavy and hollow, better suited to body boarding and hard chargers. Best when it's big.
Jimmy's Right and Left (reef) the left is a bit longer than the right, works best on solid swells. Steep take off into a long drawn out barrel. Watch out for end section.
