Ghana is undoubtedly a great place both for beginners and more experienced surfers because of the variety of beach and point breaks within a short distance. For the adventurous soul, Ghana is a playground as many of the surf breaks along the coast are waiting to be discovered. Its remoteness and hidden access through the rain forest or by boat makes it hard to reach some parts of the coast. Maybe you'll be the first to surf a perfect wave and name it?
Ghana has warm waters all year round 26c - 28 c, with the exeption of June - September (rainy season) when the water temperature drops to 23c-24c and air temperatures are between 24c and 27c. The rainy season is when we get the biggest waves, about 4 ft - 6 ft daily.
The dry season (December - May) gets less swell, so waves average 2ft - 4 ft, with day temperatures average 30c - 32c and water temperature is 28c.
What you can expect during your stay at Busua Surf Camp is a combination of perfect waves, warm water and no crowds.
Ghana offers much more besides surf. It is regarded as a great first time African destination due to its hospitality, safety, developed roads and infrastructure system. The country has enjoyed decades of peace, economic development and political stability.
Ghana is blessed with amazing natural scenery and a variety of options for outdoor experiences. In the north, visitors can see elephants in the Mole National Park. Along the coast you can visit the lush rainforest in Kakum National Park, or learn about the dark history of Ghana's slave forts (one of which is an UNESCO World Heritage Site).
The surf camp is located centrally on Busua beach with local restaurants and shops a few steps away.
Here you will experience true Ghanaian hospitality, dive in African culture and enjoy fantastic international and African dishes. There’s also a rooftop bar with daily music live performances with local musicians where foreigner can participate and learn how to play African drums (djambé). Stay in comfortable rooms right on the beach.
Breakfast is served at the hotel but lunch and dinner are organised in local restaurants. Some other special meals can be ordered like fresh fish, lobster and much more for fewer than 5 euros.
By doing this we can continue to sustain local businesses. You'll also have the chance, if you like, to get involved in some volunteer projects. These projects are currently focusing on ecotourism and development projects, including education, health, sanitation, surf lifesaving, sports development and environmental projects, directly related with local population.
Ghana is on the rise as a surfing destination.
Rainy season from June to September brings in the biggest waves. You can expect 4ft - 6 ft waves and guaranteed surf every day. The currents can get a big strong around high tide however, so you should be comfortable in the water and be a confident surfer to get out past the break during this time.
For beginners, the waves are suitable all year round but the dry season December - May is the best for those who are going to surf for the first time. Waves average between 2ft - 4ft around this time. The water is warmer as well and the weather is sunny which also means that the sea is smooth and the waves are glassy.
Busua is a great starting point for all surfers. The beach break offers fun rides both left and right for all surfing levels. For the more experienced surfer, our famous "Black Mamba" left hand point break is just 10 min walk away by foot (or a 15min paddle).
The other points are between 10 min and 1 hour car ride away. There are so many to choose from, steep and challenging waves or rounded and mellow waves. We can also bring you to some of the point breaks by Ghanaian wooden fishing boat depending on the weather condition.
