Kenitra, formerly known as Port Lyautey, is a small city in Sebou river mouth with a very narrow relation with the Atlantic.
Since its foundation by the Phoenicians, this place has always had a big military importance.
This strategic gateway to the Atlantic was occupied also by Romans, Portuguese, Spanish, French and lately by Americans till the 90’s.
It was precisely the American troopers stationed here that started to surf the first waves in Morocco in the 60’s! This is why Kenitra is considered the birthplace of surfing in Morocco.

. This is in fact the first place surfed in Morocco
, in 1964, when US soldiers from Kenitra military base
brought their surf boards. Since then it has attracted many surfers from all over the world, especially from Europe
