Friday 13th was an epic day for Ericeira, Portugal when Kelly Slater entered the water along with Tiago Pires. Tiago, the Portuguese surfer in the World Tour invited Kelly to surf one of the most powerful breaks in Portugal. It was the first time Kelly surfed this break says Tiago, and it was a wish come true as the king was already for several times in the past to surf it. Guess now the pause in the World Tour made it possible for Kelly to come to Portugal and do a test drive in this surf spot, one of the most consistent and powerful European waves. World Record for The Biggest Wave Ever surfed!

Wave surfed in Portugal nominated to the Billabong XXL Biggest Wave Awards Garrett Mcnamara made history in Nazaré, Portugal surfing a wave with 30 meters in November 2011. Mcnamara was astonished with the potential of the wave for some time now and came to surf the waves of Praia do Norte with another big wave rider CJ Macias. The biggest wave caught Monday 7th, reaching 30 meters when the swell reached its highest peak. Billabong which hosts the biggest wave’s event, the Billabong XXL Biggest Wave Award, has nominated this wave to the award that takes place in March 2012. Now Nazaré is bidding to be a regular stage of the XXL wave contest joining other destinations like the famous Waimea and Maverick's. Watch here the biggest waves ridden in 2011.

The Estoril Surf Festival will host the last stage of the European Longboard Circuit.

Next weekend, December 10th – 11th, all the European longboarders like Ben Skinner and the current champ Remy Araúzo are driving south to participate in the Grand Finale of the European Longboard Circuit. It is the last stage of the circuit crowning the champ of 2011. The event is part of the Estoril Surf Festival and is sponsored by the municipality of Cascais that holds some of the best European surfing spots like Carcavelos , Guincho and S. Billabong Mundaka Challenge 2012

The best left in the World according to Tom Curren, one of the living surf legends, will be hosting again a surfing event. The Billabong Mundaka Challenge will start its waiting period from January 15th to the end of March. In between these dates, some of the best tube riders in world will be invited to surf the Basque most famous wave. According to the organization this will not be a common event and it will definitely bring Mundaka to the map, after being removed in 2009 from the regular stages of the World Tour of surfing. It will have a different format with one hour heats of 6 surfers. The prize money is symbolic of 15.000 USD. Who is Martin Potter?

World surfing champion in 89, Martin Potter is described by Stab Magazine as “the man who brought cool (and just the right amount of fury and sex) to surfing”. A British that kid that moved with his family to South Africa and became a phenomenon sponsored by Gotcha at the age of 10. With 24 years old Pottz won the title by the biggest margin in pro surfing history. With 44 years old, Martin is today one of the most renowned and respected surf commentators, usually seen at the beach or wearing headphones in cabin booths of surf contests. NGOs organize world wave conference in Biarritz and San Sebastian – 24-25th October 2011

Surfers Against Sewage (SAS), Save the Waves Coalition, World Surfing Reserves, the Surfrider Foundation and Salvem o Surf (SOS) will be hosting a global conference to discuss about the main issues that affect our waves. The conference will debate over questions like the value of waves for surfer’s communities, threats and sustainable strategies to protect them. Along with conference the private sector, scientists, oceanographers, international experts in waves or coastal development will be sharing ideas, discussing legislation and highlighting best practices in the protection of surf spots. The conference will have two stages: the first in Biarritz, France - October 24th and 25th in San Sebastian, Spain. For more information and webcast visit the conference website. Kepa Acero rides tsunami in Alaska

Kepa Acero came across this little tsunami wave during his video adventures in the Alaskan wilds. Although it resembles a tidal bore, the wave happened soon after a quake in the region. During the year 2011, Kepa Acero will venture on a never before experienced journey: the search and exporation of new surfbreaks around the last frontiers of the world, ALASKA and PATAGONIA. Celebrity surfers and sponsor Cali Bamboo raise 50 000 USD to the Surfrider Foundation - Malibu, September 10th

A vast group of celebrity surfers gathered for a free expression session celebrating the annual anniversary of the SRF supporting its quest for the protection of our world’s oceans, waves and beaches. Cali Bamboo donated first 250 USD to SRF for each wave surfed by celebrities. The amount per wave was then doubled due to lower sea conditions. “Even though the surf was small, everyone was stoked to be out in support of Surfrider,” said actor David Chokachi to SRF. Wave in Sweden threatened by illegal harbor expansion

Thanks to protests in 2008, the plans to extend the pier in Molle’s Harbor in Sweden were put to a stop at the very last minute, protecting the surfing spot at Mölle’s Harbor mouth in Skåne, which is considered to be one of Sweden’s best right point breaks. The Swedish Environmental Court rejected Molle’s municipality’s proposal to extend the harbor due to the absence of a comprehensive environmental impact study. However, new problems have arisen.In February, part of the harbor was extended without permission. The official reason cited for this construction was “regular maintenance,” a claim which is currently under investigation. Even if the maintenance claim is valid, the proper authorities were not notified before the construction took place. Protesters from the Radda Molle Surf Coalition attempted to put a stop to the construction activities but were unsuccessful and the wave has been affected, as the amount of swell hitting the surf point is likely to be less than even before. The community will continue with protests and try to show local residents that the Molle wave is an asset for the economy and for surfers. This leads us to the question: Should all surf spots to be secret? One would be tempted to say yes in the first place. However we all know of waves that were saved due to its global awareness and promotion, avoiding human made developments. Joan Duru won Nike 6.0 in Seignosse - France

The young French pro surfer, Joan Duru, claimed the Nike 6.0 in Seignosse with some progressive surfing. “I’m really stoked with this win,” Joan said on the podium, “It’s been a great day, fun waves, great vibes and a cool contest format.” Both Joan and 2nd place finisher Guadeloupe’s Jex Debray were awarded all-important wildcards for the International Final in Anglet at the end of August. A pulse in swell saw organizers elect to run at Casernes beach, where conditions offered punchy shoulder-high peaks breaking close to shore, allowing surfers to showcase their most innovative manoeuvres in the warm summer waters. This month Surfer mag made a special issue about the 100 best waves in the world. And among these waves, comes Mundaka, with Tom Curren saying this is the best wave he has ever seen. Roxy Pro Biarritz and Quicksilver Pro Ribeira d’Ilhas presented with good conditions marking the beginning of the summer season

In the early summer months of June and July, two events took place close to two of Surf’inn Surfcamps in Portugal and France: the Quicksilver Pro Portugal, a 6-star prime ASP event and the Roxy Pro Biarritz in France, the last event of the women’s World Championship Tour. Both events were presented with good quality waves (1 meter) allowing pros’ show off and high solid scores. In Biarritz, Stephanie Gilmore won the final against the new world champion the Hawaiian Carissa Moore, whereas in Portugal, the promising Julian Wilson defeated the incredible Brazilian flyer, Gabriel Medina. To most of Surf’inn crew attending the events it was more than competition, it was the beginning of a vibrant summer which we all hope to be wavy but also about fun, chilling, and happy days! Ericeira, Portugal, has been formally approved as a World Surfing Reserve (WSR) along with other famous surfing spots like Malibu and Santa Cruz. These are the first sites to receive the prestigious WSR designation. Ericeira is the surf mecca for Portuguese and international surfers. The approved Ericeira surf zone consists of 4 km (2.5 miles) of coastline that contains a highly concentrated group of quality surf breaks, several of them world-class, including the popular Ribeira d'Ilhas and other world-renowned breaks. Ericeira is such a diverse surfing coastline, it has something for everyone, said WCT professional surfer Tiago Pires, who grew up surfing there. Getxo Sea Week Festival

Between the 20th and 26th of June – 2011, it will take place in the Basque city of Getxo, Spain, the Getxo SEA WEEK festival. March the month of recycling actions

What if all of us pick up a bit of trash left on a beach after surfing? How many times have you walked by a piece of paper or a plastic bag on the sand and just kept walking, because you figured someone else will pick it up? It was someone's fault to leave them there, will it be our fault to pass trough and do nothing? In March many surf associations and companies have declared war on those left belongings and no owner's pieces of trash... The Portuguese big wave rider specialist Jose Gregorio, agrees that this is a very special place for big wave lovers. Also known as the Nazare' canyon and has the perfect conditions to host an international event of big waves being prepared to take place in 2012 and already has the support of the local authorities and sponsors.
